Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (SMEDI) was established in 2013 under the Trustees Incorporation Act (Cap 5:3) of the laws of Malawi and its mandated is to promote the development, growth and expansion of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.
In order to fulfill its mandate, SMEDI undertook several reforms under the Public Sector Reforms Programme that was launched by His Excellency President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in February 2015.SMEDI is undertaking the following reforms:
Introduction of Structured Training Programmes in Business Management and re-lated courses as an income generating strategy
Curriculum development for Business Management Courses was completed and incorporates courses in Entrepreneurship, Business Management, basic accounting and Book-Keeping, coaching and mentoring and Customer Service.
The reform has also led to the installation and commissioning of a State of the Art business incubation machinery in value addition (Agro- processing, Fuel briquette making, Gemstone cutting and polishing and packaging machinery) at SMEDI Training Institute in Mponela.
Revamping the Poultry Demonstration Unit in Blantyre/b>
The project site has been rejuvenated but is currently being used as a Leather Design Studio for the Leather Industry Association of Malawi (LIAMA) Project.
Managing and strengthening the operations of the Board and Lodge at Mponela/b>
Assessment of infrastructural facilities was done in 2017 and renovation is being done in phases starting with upgrading of twelve (12) rooms.
Looking at the initiated reforms and progress made, SMEDI is doing a good job in undertaking reforms in improving service delivery and empowering Malawians for their popular participation in the country’s development.
